Lets face it; Lara Croft is every gamers favourite heroine. If she isnt, its probably because youve never played a Tomb Raider game before. If you havent played a Tomb Raider game before then where have you been for the past seventeen years? When I was a child my parents allowed me to play two games on our old Windows 95 PC. Those two games were Worms and Tomb Raider. I can remember countless evenings where my brother, my dad and I would play Tomb Raider together trying to guide Lara through the various ruins and temples like a female Indiana Jones. So, when I heard that Square Enix were planning on rebooting the franchise I was, understandably, a little skeptical. I had felt for a long time that the Tomb Raider series had fallen from grace. Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld were much of the same. Sure, they were good games, but they werent offering anything new. Square Enix promised to do just that, to reboot and re-brand the Tomb Raider game series. Well, re...

PC World: "So, its not perfect. Tomb Raider holds your hand a little too much for the sake of story, but then sacrifices story for the sake of incongruous challenges. Somewhere in that mess of minor mistakes it strikes a balance, and secures a place among the best games Ive ever played. Not only is 2013s Tomb Raider well worth your time, but it bodes well for the games to come in the rebooted franchise."

AtomicGamer: "Tomb Raider delivers a slick, fun time with plenty of collectibles, great action, and an excellent main character. It's not exactly what those of us who played the original might have been expecting in a reboot, what with third-person cover shooting and linear platform action dominating the time spent playing. Rather than being in confident control of her adventure, Lara starts out fragile and desperately trying to survive, and that theme manages to permeate throughout the entire game. It works, but it's going to wear thin quickly if Crystal Dynamics relies on it for too long, so I hope that they expand things out and give Lara her confidence back for the next game. Tomb Raider might not be what we expected and the online play is a bust, but this is still a wonderful solo game that really rounds out the excellent selection of new titles we're seeing for a month like March."

ActionTrip: "Crystal Dynamics have successfully reestablished one of the most popular video game heroines. Its a shame that the gameplay isnt as inventive and fun as the tale thats being told."

Just, listen, ditch the multiplayer arm. Tomb Raider makes for incredible single player fodder. Keep Lara on that path and this franchise is in wonderful shape.

Tomb Raider is a reboot of the classic series following the infamous adventurer, Lara Croft. This new episode in the grand saga has been made not only to try and return these games to their former glory, following a slip in standards with some of the more recent releases, but also to tell the as yet untold and unknown origin story of this legendary heroine.

STFUandPlay's Brian Munjoma writes: "Its hard to believe that is has been almost 20 years since Lara Croft first graced our screens in the original Tomb Raider on the PlayStation 1. Since then, she has starred in a string of chart topping games; a couple of movies and in 2006 was recognized as being the Most Successful Videogame Heroine by Guinness World Records. So it would come as an odd surprise that Square Enix would want to reboot such a popular and successful franchise."
